Patna: Students studying in Classes 9 to 12 in CBSE-affiliated schools are set to receive credit scores under a new assessment framework that recognises not only academic performance but also vocational education, practical learning, sports and other skill-based activities.
The move is part of the National Credit Framework (NCrF), introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to create a flexible and integrated education system by assigning credits for different forms of learning.
Credits to be awarded for academics and skills
Under the framework, students will receive credits for core academic subjects as well as vocational education, practical work, experiential learning and sports activities.
CBSE has proposed 40 credits for every academic session comprising 1,200 learning hours. Students opting for additional subjects will also receive credits for those courses.
How the credit system will benefit students
The accumulated credits are expected to help students beyond school education. After Class 12, these credits can be used in higher education and may support admission processes, multiple entry-exit options and lateral entry into selected professional courses.
The framework is also expected to strengthen students’ academic profiles during admission and registration for higher education programmes.
What is the National Credit Framework (NCrF)?
The National Credit Framework (NCrF) is a credit-based system introduced by the Government of India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It was implemented in 2023 by the Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other regulatory bodies.
The framework integrates school education, higher education and vocational or skill education, allowing learning achievements across different streams to be recognised through a common credit system.
Focus on holistic learning
The framework seeks to place classroom education, vocational training and practical skills on a common platform. By recognising academic learning alongside skill development and experiential education, it aims to encourage holistic development while creating more flexible learning and career pathways for students.
