Patna: Monsoon activity is set to intensify again in Bihar, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for rain in 18 districts, including Patna. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are likely in some areas.
Weather conditions are expected to remain largely normal in the remaining 20 districts, although residents may continue to experience humid and uncomfortable weather. Some areas could witness cloudy skies and light rain.
The weather department has forecast the possibility of heavy rain in several districts on August 18.
Rainfall recorded across Bihar
Several parts of Bihar received rain during the past 24 hours. Madhubani recorded the highest rainfall at 41 mm during this period. Rain was also reported in Patna, Bettiah, Buxar and Samastipur.
In Chhapra, around 40 minutes of rain caused waterlogging in several areas. Water accumulated to depths of around 1.5 to 2.5 feet on roads, while more than 100 shops were reportedly affected by water entering their premises.
Bihar has received 39% less rainfall than normal so far this monsoon season. With rainfall activity expected to increase over north Bihar in the coming days, the deficit could narrow to some extent.
Rain likely in Patna
Patna is likely to receive rain on Friday, with thunderstorms and lightning possible in some areas. Despite the possibility of rain, the maximum temperature is expected to remain around 36°C to 38°C.
Rain late on Thursday evening brought some relief to residents of Patna from the humid heat.
Weather activity likely to increase
According to weather experts, monsoon activity is expected to increase across Bihar in the coming days. Thunderstorms and strong winds may develop over parts of south-west Bihar, as well as the north-western and north-central regions.
The impact of the changing weather pattern is also expected to gradually increase across districts in north Bihar, bringing more rainfall activity to the region.
With the monsoon expected to become more active, residents in the districts under the yellow alert have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms, lightning and periods of strong winds.
