Patna: Patna Metro is moving towards its next phase of expansion, with work progressing on a 3.1km elevated section between Mithapur and Khemnichak and larger six-coach trains being procured to accommodate growing passenger numbers.
The elevated superstructure on the Mithapur-Khemnichak stretch has been completed, while construction of stations and other associated infrastructure is under way. Metro services on the section are targeted to begin by June 2027.
Four stations are planned along the route: Mithapur, Ramkrishna Nagar, Jaganpura and Khemnichak.
Six-Coach Trains To Increase Capacity
Patna Metro currently operates three-coach train sets. To prepare for higher passenger demand, the Patna Metro Rail Corporation has ordered three six-coach train sets from Pune Metro.
The trains are being acquired on a three-year lease and are expected to arrive in Patna by December.
The longer trains will allow more passengers to travel in a single service and are expected to ease congestion during peak hours.
Work is also under way on tracks, lifts, escalators and other facilities for the Mithapur-Khemnichak section, with tenders being processed for the remaining works.
Khemnichak To Become Key Interchange
Khemnichak is expected to become an important interchange point in the Patna Metro network.
The station is scheduled to become operational in October and will connect two corridors, with one route heading towards Malahi Pakri and another towards Mithapur.
The three-storey station will allow passengers to transfer between the two metro routes once it becomes operational.
Underground Work Nears Completion
Construction is also advancing on the approximately 10.54km underground section between Malahi Pakri and Patna Junction.
Only around 100 metres of tunnelling remains, with completion targeted for November. The route will include stations at Rajendra Nagar, Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Patna University, PMCH, Gandhi Maidan, Akashvani and Patna Junction.
The entire section is targeted for completion by 2028.
Elsewhere, work is beginning on the underground section between Patna Junction and Rukanpura, while construction of the elevated section from Rukanpura to Danapur is under way.
An underground connection between Patna Junction and Mithapur is also planned, although construction has not yet started.
Rs 628.32 Crore Approved
The state government has approved Rs 628.32 crore for construction and operation of the Patna Metro project, which is expected to support work across different sections.
The overall Patna Metro project is planned to cover approximately 32.50km, connecting Danapur with Patna City.
As the different corridors progress towards completion, the Mithapur-Khemnichak extension and the introduction of six-coach trains are expected to strengthen Patna’s public transport capacity and provide additional options for commuters across the capital.
