Patna: Prashant Kishor, the newly elected MLA from Bankipur, will take the oath of office and secrecy in the Bihar Legislative Assembly on August 17, 2026, formally beginning his legislative tenure after his first electoral victory.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 10.30am on Monday in the Assembly. Kishor’s office announced the programme on social media, describing it as the beginning of a new era of change in Bankipur.

Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, won the 2026 Bankipur Assembly by-election, defeating the BJP candidate and ending the party’s long-standing hold over the Patna constituency.

Kishor Wins First Election

Polling for the by-election took place on July 30, with results declared on August 3.

According to the Election Commission, Kishor secured 64,151 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha, who received 44,827 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Kumari finished with 14,273 votes.

Kishor’s victory margin was 19,324 votes.

The result marked his first electoral victory and represented a significant upset in a constituency that had been regarded as a BJP stronghold for nearly three decades.

Bypoll Triggered By Rajya Sabha Election

The Bankipur seat fell vacant after BJP leader Nitin Navin was elected to the Rajya Sabha, necessitating the by-election.

The urban constituency in Patna had remained firmly associated with the BJP, but the party suffered a decisive defeat in the 2026 contest.

Voter turnout, however, was lower than in the previous Assembly election. Bankipur recorded 41.39% turnout in the 2025 Assembly election, compared with 34.3% in the 2026 by-election.

Kishor’s oath on August 17 will mark the formal start of his tenure as Bankipur’s representative in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
