Patna: The monsoon is likely to remain active over Bihar for the next seven days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a heavy rainfall alert for five districts. Some areas may also experience lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph.
While most parts of the state, including Patna, are expected to experience generally normal weather, the IMD has forecast continued rainfall in south-central Bihar between August 14 and 20. Maximum temperatures during this period are likely to remain between 30°C and 36°C.
Heavy rain, thunderstorms likely in several districts
The weather department has warned of strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph, thunderstorms and lightning in parts of southwestern and northwestern Bihar. Bhabhua, Rohtas and Siwan are among the districts under a heavy rainfall alert.
The forecast indicates that several districts could receive heavy rain in different phases over the coming days. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert to possible waterlogging. People have also been advised to avoid open areas and stay away from trees and electricity poles during thunderstorms and lightning.
Patna records 33°C; heavy rain in parts of the city
Patna recorded a maximum temperature of around 33°C on Friday. Significant rainfall was recorded in parts of the city, with Phulwarisharif receiving 57.4 mm and Patna Airport recording 50.4 mm of rain.
Monsoon system driving rainfall
Weather experts said the change in weather conditions is linked to the prevailing monsoon system. The monsoon trough is passing over Bihar, while a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened.
These systems are bringing moisture-laden winds into the state, increasing the possibility of heavy rainfall in several areas.
Weather conditions may vary significantly across the state, with some districts receiving intense showers while others could continue to experience humidity and relatively warm conditions.
Bihar records 38% rainfall deficit
Despite the recent rainfall, Bihar continues to face a significant rainfall deficit this monsoon season. The state should have received around 640 mm of rainfall so far, but only about 380 mm has been recorded.
This represents a 38% deficit compared with normal rainfall, according to the latest figures cited by the weather department. Several districts across Bihar have also recorded rainfall significantly below normal during the current monsoon season.
