Patna: Bihar joined the country in marking its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, with the Tricolour hoisted at government and non-government institutions across the capital and special ceremonies held at the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
At the Assembly complex, Speaker Prem Kumar hoisted the national flag, while Legislative Council chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh led the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Council complex. Public representatives, officials and staff paid tribute to those who fought for India’s independence.
The ceremonies began amid a patriotic atmosphere, with the national anthem played after the Tricolour was hoisted.
Assembly Speaker Calls For Stronger Democracy
At the Legislative Assembly, Prem Kumar paid tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence.
He said freedom was not merely a political achievement but the outcome of the struggle, sacrifice and dedication of the country’s people.
The Speaker also stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold constitutional values. He said democratic institutions had a responsibility to meet people’s expectations and ensure that the benefits of development reached the last person in society.
Those attending the ceremony joined in the national anthem, while patriotic slogans and messages of national unity echoed across the Assembly complex.
Council Chairman Highlights Future Responsibilities
At the Bihar Legislative Council, Awadhesh Narayan Singh hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of council members, officials and staff.
Extending Independence Day greetings, the chairman paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
He said Independence Day was both a reminder of India’s past and an occasion to reflect on the responsibilities that lie ahead. Since independence, he said, the country had travelled a long road in democracy, development and social justice.
The responsibility for strengthening the country further now rests with the younger generation, he said.
