Muzaffarpur/Patna: A major development is on the cards for Muzaffarpur’s Patahi Airport, with Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary scheduled to lay the foundation stone for new construction work on September 7. The development has renewed hopes of restoring passenger air services from the airport after nearly four decades.
The district administration has accelerated preparations for the foundation-laying ceremony. Several ministers from the Central and Bihar governments are also expected to attend the programme.
The redevelopment of Patahi Airport is being viewed as an important step towards improving air connectivity across North Bihar, with potential benefits for passengers, businesses and the region’s economy.
Patahi Airport Could See Flights Again After Four Decades
Patahi Airport has a long aviation history. Regular passenger flight operations were conducted from the airport between 1967 and 1982, including services between Muzaffarpur and Patna.
At the time, smaller passenger aircraft operated from the airport’s approximately 3,600-foot runway. However, regular services were discontinued in 1982, after which the airport’s use became limited.
Since then, the facility has occasionally been used by helicopters and special aircraft, but regular passenger flights have remained suspended.
The proposed redevelopment has now brought fresh hopes that commercial flight operations could eventually resume from Patahi Airport.
Runway, Terminal and ATC Infrastructure in Focus
The proposed development is expected to transform the existing airport infrastructure. Plans include improvements to the runway, construction of a new terminal building and development of an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is involved in the airport’s development. In the initial phase, operations involving smaller aircraft are expected to receive priority.
There is also a proposal to develop a pilot training centre at Patahi Airport. If implemented, the facility could give the airport an additional role in aviation training while creating new employment opportunities.
UDAN Scheme Could Improve Regional Connectivity
The development of Patahi Airport is also linked to efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity. Its potential operation under the UDAN scheme could provide passengers with more direct air travel options to major cities.
At present, residents of several North Bihar districts often have to travel to other cities to access air services. The revival of Patahi Airport could reduce this dependence and make air travel more accessible to people in the region.
Muzaffarpur’s Litchi Industry Could Get a Boost
Better air connectivity could also benefit Muzaffarpur’s agricultural and commercial sectors.
The district is famous for its Shahi litchi, and improved air infrastructure could provide additional options for transporting perishable agricultural products to distant markets.
Apart from agriculture, the airport could support trade, tourism, investment and industrial activity by making travel to Muzaffarpur easier and faster.
Benefits Could Extend Across North Bihar
The impact of Patahi Airport’s revival could extend beyond Muzaffarpur. People from neighbouring districts could also use the facility for travel related to business, education, healthcare, employment and tourism.
For passengers who currently need to travel to Patna or other cities to catch flights, a functional airport in Muzaffarpur could provide a more convenient alternative.
September 7 Could Mark a New Chapter
The foundation-laying ceremony on September 7 is expected to mark an important milestone in the redevelopment of Patahi Airport.
However, the resumption of regular commercial flights will depend on the completion of infrastructure, regulatory clearances and other operational requirements.
For now, the development has once again raised hopes that the long-silent Patahi Airport could eventually witness the return of passenger aircraft and emerge as an important aviation hub for Muzaffarpur and North Bihar.
