Patna: Bihar’s medical education infrastructure is set to expand with the National Medical Commission (NMC) granting permission to start MBBS courses at two new medical colleges from the 2026-27 academic session.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC has issued Letters of Permission (LoP) to Shri Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital in Samastipur and Government Medical College in Chhapra, Saran.
Each college has been approved to admit 50 MBBS students, taking the combined intake across the two institutions to 100 seats.
New opportunities for medical students
The approval will allow students from Samastipur, Saran and surrounding areas to pursue medical education closer to home, potentially reducing their dependence on medical colleges in other cities.
The expansion is also expected to strengthen medical education across districts and contribute to the availability of trained doctors in Bihar in the coming years.
Hospitals to expand healthcare services
The medical colleges’ associated hospitals are also expected to develop their healthcare infrastructure alongside the academic programmes.
According to the state government, the expansion will help strengthen medical facilities, human resources and specialised healthcare services, allowing patients in the surrounding regions to access modern treatment closer to home.

Government promises faculty and resources
Health Minister Nishant Kumar welcomed the NMC approval and expressed gratitude to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
He said the expansion of medical education and healthcare services in Bihar was being supported through coordinated efforts by the central and state governments.
The minister also assured that the government would ensure the availability of the faculty, infrastructure and other resources required to provide students with a strong academic environment.
The government said its broader objective is to decentralise medical education and improve access to specialised healthcare across different parts of Bihar.
With 50 MBBS seats each approved for Samastipur and Chhapra, the two institutions are expected to become additional centres for medical education while supporting the expansion of healthcare infrastructure in their respective regions.
