Patna: The 108-year-old historic water tower near Miller High School on Beer Chand Patel Path is set for restoration and redevelopment, with the Patna Municipal Corporation inviting tenders for the project.
The tender covers renovation of the old water tank, beautification of the surrounding complex and construction of a cafeteria. The estimated tender value is around Rs 3.34 crore, while the project has previously received administrative approval of around Rs 3.48 crore.
Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitish Mishra said construction would begin after the agency selection process is completed.
Historic Structure To Be Preserved
Mishra said the initiative is aimed at preserving Patna’s historical heritage while introducing modern amenities and new attractions.
The water tower, built between 1915 and 1918, stands around 130 feet high and has a capacity of approximately 100,000 gallons. Its distinctive structure and floating water-level indicator reflect the engineering systems used at the time, according to the minister.
14,400 Sq Ft Complex To Be Developed
The redevelopment will cover the entire complex, spread across approximately 14,400 square feet. A modern cafeteria of around 2,500 square feet is also planned to provide facilities for visitors.
The tender documents specify renovation of the historic water tank, beautification of its surroundings and construction of the cafeteria. The work is scheduled to be completed within six months after the contract is awarded.
Heritage Site Planned As Public Attraction
Mishra said the restoration is intended to preserve the water tower while transforming its surroundings into an attractive public space and tourist destination.
The project will combine the historic structure with modern visitor facilities, with the aim of giving a prominent heritage landmark in central Patna a new public-facing role.
