Patna: The discharge of the Gandak River at the Valmikinagar Barrage is expected to reach around 500,000 cusecs or more by the evening of September 27, according to the Bihar Water Resources Department.

The department said rainfall in the Gandak River’s catchment area in Nepal has been significantly above normal over the past 24 hours. At 11am on September 27, the barrage recorded a discharge of 424,000 cusecs, with the level continuing to rise.

Officials On 24-Hour Alert

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said all field officials have been placed on 24-hour alert in view of the rising discharge.

The department has also deployed additional engineers along both embankments of the Gandak River. Engineers have been instructed to maintain continuous monitoring and remain vigilant.

Discharge Forecast

According to the department, the current water level at the Devghat gauge site in Nepal, around 80km upstream from the Valmikinagar Barrage, indicates that the discharge could reach about 500,000 cusecs or more by the evening.

The projected discharge is expected to remain below the peak of 562,500 cusecs recorded in 2024. The department said it is continuing close monitoring of the river and barrage.

Department Says Situation Under Control

Chaudhary said the Ganges is currently at a relatively low water level, allowing water from the Gandak to discharge into the river. The department therefore does not currently anticipate widespread waterlogging or severe flooding.

He said the situation is currently under control, while acknowledging that river conditions can change. He urged residents to remain alert and vigilant and not to panic.

The Deputy Chief Minister also directed engineers to maintain continuous supervision, warning that any lapse in monitoring would invite strict action.
