Gayaji: Smita Thackeray visited Gayaji on Tuesday during the ongoing Pitru Paksha fair and performed Pind Daan and Shraddha rituals for her father-in-law, late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, and her father, Madhukar Chitre.
The rituals were conducted at the Vishnupad Temple complex under the guidance of an Acharya. The ceremony included Tarpan, Puja and Shraddha rituals, accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras.
Rituals At Vishnupad Temple
Smita Thackeray arrived in Bodh Gaya on Monday with her priest before visiting the Vishnupad Temple on Tuesday morning. She completed the Pind Daan process in accordance with the religious traditions associated with Pitru Paksha.
Speaking after the ceremony, she described performing Shraddha for her ancestors in Gayaji as a privilege and an emotional experience. She also recalled Balasaheb Thackeray’s influence on her life.
“I will strive to follow the path shown by Balasaheb,” she said, adding that she had come to Gayaji to pray for his soul and seek forgiveness for any mistakes she might have committed.
Women And Pind Daan
Smita Thackeray also spoke about questions surrounding women performing Pind Daan. She said she was initially told that women did not traditionally perform the ritual.
She subsequently consulted priests, who referred to the religious account of Goddess Sita performing Pind Daan for King Dasharatha at Gayaji. Following their guidance, she performed the rituals for her ancestors.
Pitru Paksha Draws Devotees To Gayaji
Gayaji is witnessing a large influx of devotees during the Pitru Paksha fair, with pilgrims arriving from different parts of India and abroad to perform rituals for their ancestors.
Devotees visit the Falgu River, Vishnupad Temple and various Pind Daan sites during the observance. Religious belief holds that performing Shraddha and Pind Daan at Gayaji helps attain peace and salvation for departed ancestors.
Smita Thackeray said she would work towards carrying forward Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideals and promoting Sanatan Dharma.
