Patna: Construction of JP Ganga Path Phase 2, also known as the Digha-Sherpur-Koilwar project, is set to begin in November, with the four-lane corridor expected to strengthen connectivity between Patna, Buxar and Uttar Pradesh.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 5,500 crore, will cover around 35 km from Digha to Koilwar. It will combine an elevated road section with an at-grade road built along an embankment.
The project is expected to take around four years to complete.
18-Km Elevated Road From Digha To Sherpur
The Digha-Sherpur section will feature an 18-km four-lane elevated road. From Sherpur to Koilwar, another 17.65-km four-lane stretch will be developed largely on an embankment.
Together, the two sections will form the extension of JP Ganga Path towards Koilwar and provide a faster route towards western Bihar.
Once completed, the Patna-Koilwar journey is expected to take around 35 minutes, while travel from Patna to Buxar could be reduced to approximately two hours.
Rs 5,500 Crore Project Under Hybrid Annuity Model
The project is being implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The construction agency will contribute around 60% of the project cost, while the state government will contribute the remaining 40%.
The selected agency will also be responsible for maintaining the road for 15 years after construction.
The project forms the second phase of JP Ganga Path and is intended to provide direct connectivity to several major bridges across the Ganga and the Sone.
Connectivity To UP And Delhi
The Digha-Sherpur-Koilwar corridor is expected to improve access between Patna and western Bihar while providing a link towards the Purvanchal Expressway.
This is expected to make road travel from Patna towards Buxar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi more convenient.
The project is also expected to improve connectivity between Patna and Bihta, with the Patna-Bihta journey projected to take around one hour after the corridor becomes operational.
Approach Roads For Local Areas
The project will also provide approach connectivity for areas around Danapur and Shahpur Diara, allowing local residents to access the main corridor.
The combination of the elevated Digha-Sherpur section and the Sherpur-Koilwar embankment road is expected to provide an alternative high-capacity route for traffic moving between Patna and western Bihar.
With the completion of JP Ganga Path Phase 2, the existing corridor will extend further towards Koilwar, creating a major north-western road connection from Patna.
