Why Gold Prices Differ Across Cities
Gold prices can vary between cities even when benchmark bullion rates remain the same.
Four major factors can influence the final local price:
- Transportation and security costs: Moving gold between cities involves transportation and security expenses, which can affect the final price.
- Local demand and purchase volumes: Consumption patterns and the volume of gold purchased by jewellers can influence local market rates.
- Jewellers’ associations: Local jewellery associations may determine or influence rates based on regional demand and supply conditions.
- Existing inventory: The price at which a jeweller acquired older stock can also affect the selling price.
Check Hallmark Before Buying Gold
Consumers should check the authenticity and purity of gold before making a purchase.
Buyers are advised to purchase BIS-hallmarked gold and verify the hallmark details. The hallmark indicates the purity of the gold, such as 24K, 22K or 18K.
Customers should also check the weight and prevailing rate on the day of purchase and compare prices with reliable sources such as IBJA rates.
Gold Rates Vary by Purity
The price of gold depends on its purity.
24-carat gold represents the highest commonly traded purity, while 22-carat and 18-carat gold contain a higher proportion of other metals and are therefore priced differently.
For jewellery purchases, buyers should also check making charges, taxes and other applicable costs separately from the bullion rate.
Silver Price: Check Purity Before Purchase
Silver buyers should also verify the purity and authenticity of the metal before purchasing it.
Simple physical tests may sometimes provide indications, but they cannot reliably establish purity. Buyers should therefore prefer certified silver from trusted sellers and check the relevant purity markings and invoice details.
With bullion prices continuing to fluctuate, consumers should compare the latest rates and purchase costs before making buying decisions.
