Patna: The death of a NEET aspirant in Patna has come under renewed judicial scrutiny after a Special POCSO Court raised questions over the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report. During a hearing on Tuesday, the court reportedly expressed concern over alleged lapses in the investigation, particularly the collection and handling of CCTV footage and technical evidence.
The court also reportedly reprimanded the CBI’s counsel during the proceedings. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 6.
The development comes after the CBI filed a closure report following approximately eight months of investigation, stating that there was insufficient conclusive evidence to proceed against any individual. The victim’s family has challenged the report and continues to seek further investigation.
Court Questions CBI’s Closure Report
During the hearing, the Special POCSO Court examined aspects of the CBI’s investigation and raised questions about the manner in which evidence had been collected.
The handling of CCTV footage and technical evidence reportedly came under particular scrutiny. The court also indicated that questions concerning the investigating officials may need to be addressed.
The closure report remains under consideration, and the court has not delivered a final decision on whether to accept it or direct further investigation.
NEET Aspirant Found Unconscious in Patna Hostel
The deceased student was staying at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in the Chitragupt Nagar area of Patna while preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
According to the case details, she arrived at the hostel on January 5, 2026, and was found unconscious in her room the following day, January 6. She was taken to hospital for treatment but died on January 11.
Following her death, the family raised concerns about the circumstances of the incident and alleged that injury marks were present on her body. They demanded an impartial investigation into the matter.
An FIR was registered at Chitragupt Nagar police station on January 9 on the basis of a statement by the student’s father.
Investigation Transferred From SIT to CBI
The Bihar Police initially constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the CBI by the Bihar government.
The central agency examined various aspects of the case and questioned several people during its investigation. Medical and forensic reports also formed part of the inquiry.
According to reports cited in the case coverage, the post-mortem examination documented injury marks, while forensic testing reportedly detected sperm on the student’s clothing. DNA testing was subsequently conducted.
Around 30 DNA samples were reportedly collected, but none matched the relevant sample, according to the available report. Citing a lack of sufficient conclusive evidence, the CBI subsequently filed its closure report.
Family Objects to Closure Report
After the CBI submitted its report, the student’s family approached the court to contest its findings. The victim’s mother has sought justice and raised objections to the agency’s conclusions.
The court is now examining the closure report alongside the concerns raised during the proceedings. The latest hearing has brought renewed attention to questions surrounding evidence collection and the investigation’s handling of key aspects of the case.
The allegations and reported investigative shortcomings remain subject to judicial consideration.
Next Hearing on November 6
The Special POCSO Court has fixed November 6 for the next hearing. The proceedings are expected to continue examining the CBI’s closure report and the objections raised by the victim’s family.
The court may accept the closure report or order further investigation, depending on its assessment of the material before it. No final decision has been announced, and the case remains pending
