Patna : Why will Goddess Durga be surrounded by around 1,000 nests this Durga Puja? In Patna’s Bhikhna Pahari area, a distinctive ‘Ghonsla Pandal’ is using an unusual decoration to draw attention to the need to protect sparrows and their natural habitats.
Located in Kachahari Gali, the pandal has been designed to resemble a giant bird’s nest. The organisers have used around 1,000 artificial nests and 1,000 artificial sparrows to create the setting, with leaves and twigs adding to its natural appearance.
The installation is centred on the house sparrow, Bihar’s state bird. Through the theme, the organisers hope visitors will reflect on the changing presence of sparrows in urban neighbourhoods and the importance of protecting local birdlife.
Why Has The Pandal Chosen A Sparrow Theme?
Sparrows were once a familiar sight around homes, courtyards and rooftops. However, their presence has declined in several localities, drawing attention to concerns about changing urban environments and bird habitats.
The organisers said the sparrow theme was chosen to raise awareness about the bird’s conservation. The pandal aims to offer visitors more than a place to worship during Durga Puja by connecting the festival with a message of environmental protection.
The hanging nests and artificial sparrows are arranged across the structure, while leaves and branches give the space a garden-like appearance. Lighting around the decorations is designed to make the display stand out after dark.
A Small Lane With A Distinctive Pandal
Although the pandal is located in a narrow lane, its elaborate decoration has made it a notable attraction for visitors during the festival.
The organisers have adopted different themes over the years. According to information shared by them, last year’s pandal was based on ring lights. An earlier edition featured leaves, while a jungle theme was used in another previous year.
This year’s design puts sparrows at the centre of the decoration, combining the worship of Goddess Durga with an appeal to protect birds and nature.
Organised By A Committee Active Since 1985
The Durga Puja celebration at this location dates back to 1985. The pandal is being created by the Bal Mandali organisation of the Shri Shri Bharat Mata Puja Samiti, whose members are largely children.
A child associated with the committee, Aarav Raj, shared details about the installation and the organisers’ effort to introduce a different theme each year.
The pandal is located in Kachahari Gali, Bhikhna Pahari, Patna. Visitors can see the sparrow-themed decoration while offering prayers to Goddess Durga, with the display highlighting the need to preserve the small bird that was once a common sight in neighbourhoods.
