Patna: Patliputra University (PPU) in Patna has introduced new regulations for PhD admissions for the 2026-27 academic session, with teachers due to retire within the next three years no longer eligible to guide new research scholars.
The change is expected to affect around 100 teachers. However, those already supervising registered PhD scholars will be allowed to continue guiding them until their research work is completed.
The university is preparing to announce subject-wise vacancies for the upcoming session, likely in November or early December. Admissions will be conducted under the revised PhD ordinance and regulations.
Existing PhD Scholars Will Not Be Affected
According to the university administration, the new rules apply to newly admitted research scholars. Students already registered under teachers nearing retirement will continue their research under the existing arrangement.
The decision is intended to prevent disruptions in ongoing research and help scholars complete their work within the required timeframe.
How Will PPU Determine PhD Vacancies?
The university will assess available seats after reviewing admissions from the 2024-25 academic session, allocating supervisors to students who have completed their coursework and checking the status of PhD degrees awarded to existing scholars.
Students who have completed their coursework will be assigned supervisors first. The university will then calculate the remaining vacancies across subjects based on the updated position of existing research scholars and supervisors.
The subject-wise vacancy list for the 2026-27 session will be released after this assessment.
Colleges Asked to Submit Teachers’ Details
PPU has sought information from affiliated colleges about their faculty members and the research scholars working under them.
Dr Pranay Kumar Gupta, Officer on Special Duty (PhD), said the information would help the university determine the number of scholars assigned to each supervisor and identify teachers expected to retire within the next three years.
The data will be used to complete the supervisor-allocation process and assess the number of seats available for new admissions.
University Aims to Improve Research Quality
The revised regulations are intended to improve the quality of research and strengthen supervisors’ responsibilities towards their scholars.
By preventing teachers close to retirement from taking on new students, the university aims to ensure that newly admitted researchers receive consistent guidance from their supervisors throughout their research period.
Prospective applicants should watch for PPU’s official announcement of subject-wise vacancies and further details of the 2026-27 admission process.
