Patna : Bihar’s largest floating solar power plant, located at Phulwaria Dam in Rajauli block of Nawada district, could become operational by December 2026, with cable-laying work remaining before the 10 MW project can begin generating electricity.
The project, situated in Hardia panchayat, is nearing completion. Once commissioned, it is expected to generate approximately 1.60 crore units of electricity annually, with the power to be supplied to the Rajauli grid substation, according to a report.
The project is expected to improve electricity availability in Rajauli and surrounding areas, with around 90 villages projected to benefit from the additional power supply.
Cable Laying Remains Before Commissioning
Most of the construction work at the floating solar plant has reportedly been completed, with cable installation identified as the remaining major task.
The work is expected to be completed ahead of the targeted commissioning in December 2026. Once operational, the plant will transmit the electricity it generates to the Rajauli grid facility for distribution.
The proposed 10 MW capacity will make the installation a significant renewable energy project for Nawada district.
1.60 Crore Units Of Electricity Expected Annually
The plant is projected to generate around 1.60 crore units of electricity every year. The additional generation is expected to support electricity supply in Rajauli and nearby villages.
The project has been developed under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model, under which the Bihar State Power Company is expected to receive electricity at a reported rate of Rs 3.87 per unit for 25 years.
The long-term arrangement is intended to support the supply of renewable electricity under the project’s proposed operating framework.
Solar Panels Spread Across 30 Acres Of Dam Surface
The floating solar plant uses approximately 30 acres of the dam’s surface for installing solar panels. Unlike conventional ground-mounted installations, floating solar projects place panels on water bodies, reducing the need for additional land.
The location is also expected to offer potential environmental advantages. Floating panels may reduce water evaporation by limiting direct exposure to sunlight over the covered surface.
The project report also states that the installation is not expected to harm fish in the reservoir. The actual environmental impact will depend on the plant’s operation and the management of the water body.
Project Expected To Support Nawada’s Renewable Energy Capacity
The Phulwaria Dam installation is expected to add to Bihar’s renewable energy generation capacity while making use of an existing water reservoir.
The project could also draw attention to Rajauli and the surrounding area, although any impact on tourism will depend on future development and visitor facilities.
With cable-laying work remaining and December 2026 set as the target for commissioning, the next stage will be the completion of the electrical connection and the start of commercial power generation.
