Patna: In a new effort to bring out-of-school children into the education system, Bihar is preparing to launch the ‘School on Wheels’ initiative in five districts. Under the proposed arrangement, buses will be converted into mobile classrooms, taking educational facilities directly to children who are unable to attend regular schools.
The initiative is expected to provide children with lessons, mid-day meals, school uniforms and other essential facilities. Its primary objective is to reduce barriers to education and help children from disadvantaged backgrounds become part of the mainstream schooling system.
Mobile Classrooms to Reach Children Outside the Education System
Several children remain deprived of regular schooling because of financial difficulties, long distances to schools, family circumstances and a lack of awareness about educational opportunities. These challenges can prevent children from enrolling in schools or continuing their studies.
The School on Wheels initiative is being planned as an alternative arrangement to reach such children. Instead of requiring them to travel to a conventional school, the mobile classrooms will take educational opportunities closer to their homes and communities.
Mid-Day Meals and School Uniforms Also Planned
The proposed initiative will extend beyond classroom teaching. Children are also expected to receive mid-day meals, school uniforms and other necessary facilities through the programme.
Providing these facilities alongside education could help ease some of the difficulties faced by families who struggle to send their children to regular schools. Access to meals and uniforms may also encourage children to participate in learning activities and continue their education.
Five Districts to Be Covered in the Initial Phase
The initiative is being prepared for implementation in five districts of Bihar. However, the names of the selected districts and the proposed launch date have not yet been specified in the information currently available.
Details regarding the number of buses, teaching arrangements, deployment of teachers, classroom schedules and the process for identifying and enrolling children are also awaited.
Focus on Children Unable to Attend Regular Schools
The programme is aimed particularly at children who have remained outside the formal education system or have been unable to continue their studies. A mobile classroom could help identify such children and provide them with an opportunity to learn through a more accessible arrangement.
The initiative may also help address the challenge of school attendance in areas where distance, poverty and social circumstances make regular schooling difficult.
Implementation Will Determine the Initiative’s Reach
The success of School on Wheels will depend on more than the availability of buses. Regular classes, trained teachers, suitable learning materials and timely delivery of promised facilities will be essential to ensure that children receive meaningful education.
Coordination with parents and local communities will also be important to identify eligible children and encourage families to make use of the facility.
With preparations under way to introduce the initiative in five districts, Bihar’s proposed mobile-school model aims to take education closer to children who need it most. Further details about the selected districts, launch schedule and operational framework are awaited.
