Patna: Getting a new electricity connection in Bihar is set to become easier, with the state government introducing a simplified application process, abolishing physical verification for connections of up to 150 kW and replacing separate cost estimates with fixed charges.
The changes have been introduced in accordance with directives from the Central Government and the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC). The revised system aims to reduce paperwork, minimise delays and make the process more transparent, particularly for rural consumers.
Applicants can now apply through the Suvidha mobile app or the online portal, where the applicable connection charges will be automatically calculated and displayed.
Physical Verification Abolished For Loads Up To 150 kW
Under the revised rules, physical verification, including on-site inspections and measurements of land or premises, will no longer be required for new electricity connections with a load of up to 150 kW.
The move is expected to reduce procedural delays and simplify the process for households, farmers and small businesses seeking new connections.
Fixed Charges Introduced For New Connections
The earlier system involved separate estimates for materials such as wires and poles, labour and supervision. These separate calculations have now been replaced with a consolidated, one-time service connection fee based on the required electricity load.
For single-phase domestic and other connections, the charge is Rs 900 per kW for loads up to 3 kW, amounting to Rs 2,700 for a 3 kW connection. For loads above 3 kW and up to 7 kW, consumers will pay Rs 2,700 for the first 3 kW, followed by Rs 1,000 for each additional kW.
For three-phase connections between 5 kW and 19 kW, the standard charge is Rs 4,500 for up to 5 kW, with an additional Rs 1,500 per kW for capacity exceeding 5 kW. For connections between 20 kW and 44 kW, the fee is Rs 21,000 for up to 20 kW, plus Rs 2,000 for every additional kW. High-tension connections between 45 kW and 150 kW will attract a standard charge of Rs 7,000 per kW.
These charges apply to new connections within the existing electricity distribution network in generally electrified areas.
Electricity Companies To Install Wires And Meters
Under the new arrangement, consumers will not have to make separate arrangements for installing service wires and electricity meters.
After the applicant pays the prescribed fee online, the electricity distribution company will take responsibility for installing the required wires and meter at the premises.
The applicable charges will be displayed during the online application process, allowing consumers to know the cost before making payment.
Rural Consumers And Small Businesses To Benefit
The revised system is intended to make new electricity connections more accessible to residents of villages and towns, farmers and small shopkeepers.
By removing physical verification for eligible connections and eliminating separate estimates for materials and labour, the government aims to reduce administrative procedures and ensure faster service delivery.
According to the press release, connections will be provided within the stipulated timeframe after payment of the prescribed charges.
