Rohtas/Patna: Police in Bihar’s Rohtas district seized Rs 66.50 lakh in cash from a car during a late-night vehicle checking operation near the Shiv Sagar toll plaza on Saturday. Three people, including two women, who were travelling in the vehicle have been detained for questioning.

According to preliminary information, the occupants were travelling from Varanasi towards Sasaram when police stopped their car during a checking drive near the toll plaza. During the subsequent search, officers discovered Rs 66.50 lakh in cash inside the vehicle.

Following the recovery, police immediately seized the money and began questioning the occupants to establish its source and purpose.

Cash Counted Late at Night, Income Tax Department Informed

After recovering the large amount of cash, police arranged for the currency notes to be counted at the toll plaza office. A woman police officer was also present during the counting process.

The Income Tax Department has been informed about the recovery. Investigators are now examining where the money came from, why it was being transported and whether the occupants have valid documents to explain the cash.

Occupants Identified as Sasaram Residents

The people travelling in the car have reportedly been identified as Chandan Soni, a resident of the Jani Bazaar locality in Sasaram, and his family members.

According to preliminary accounts, they had travelled to Varanasi for Dhanteras shopping but were returning without making the intended purchases.

The cash was recovered when their vehicle was stopped for inspection near the Shiv Sagar toll plaza.

Police Investigating Source of Rs 66.50 Lakh

Police are continuing to question the three occupants to determine the source of the seized money and its intended use.

The involvement of the Income Tax Department is also expected to assist in examining the financial aspects of the case. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
