Bhagalpur/Patna : Farmers and vegetable vendors in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district have alleged illegal collection of money and theft of produce while using ferry services to cross the Ganga, as the repair work on Vikramshila Setu has increased dependence on water transport.
The ferry service between BIADA Ghat in Barari and Mahadevpur Ghat in Naugachia has become a key route for commuters, farmers and traders. However, those using the service say they are facing additional expenses and alleged harassment while transporting their produce.
Farmers Allege Rs 30 Charge Per Bundle
Farmers claim that ferry workers charge Rs 30 for every bundle of vegetables or fruits transported on the vessels. Despite paying the stated amount, some workers allegedly remove two to four kilograms of vegetables from their sacks.
Amod Kumar, a farmer from the diara region, said his family’s livelihood depends on agriculture and bringing vegetables to Bhagalpur for sale is essential. He alleged that workers take produce from the sacks even after collecting the transport charge.
Farmers also claim that some people attempt to take vegetables forcibly after they disembark at the ghat. Vendors said they had protested against the alleged practice on Friday, adding that the loss directly affects their earnings.
Altercation on Ferry Triggers Police Intervention
Tension was reported on Sunday evening while passengers and vehicles were boarding the final ferry service, operating under the name Titan-3.
An argument reportedly broke out between ferry staff and a motorcycle rider who crossed the ticket-checking barrier. Santosh Kumar, a resident of Naugachia, said he was willing to pay the required fee but objected to the alleged behaviour of the staff.
The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, with reports of a scuffle. Police intervened and, after efforts to calm the situation, Santosh was allowed to board the vessel.
Muddy Roads and Traffic Jams Add to Commuters’ Problems
Apart from the allegations of overcharging and produce theft, passengers are also facing poor infrastructure around the ferry points.
Rain and the receding water level of the Ganga have affected the one-way arrangement at Barari Ghat. The approach road leading to the exit near Barari cremation ground is reportedly covered in mud, making it difficult for passengers to walk safely.
A senior citizen raised the issue at an administrative camp on Sunday morning and requested that soil be spread over the route to level the surface.
Traffic congestion on the approach road towards BIADA has further added to the difficulties. Unauthorised parking of e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws near the Mal area reportedly obstructs vehicle movement, leaving passengers rushing to catch ferries stranded in traffic.
Farmers Seek Administrative Action
Farmers and commuters have urged the administration to investigate the alleged illegal collection and removal of vegetables, improve vehicle movement and parking arrangements, and repair the pedestrian access route.
With the ferry service continuing to play an important role during the repair of Vikramshila Setu, users say better monitoring and basic facilities at the ghats are necessary to ensure safer and smoother travel.
