Sheikhpura/Patna : Three busy railway crossings in Bihar’s Sheikhpura district have been proposed for the construction of rail overbridges (ROBs) to improve road connectivity and ease traffic movement.
The Sheikhpura division of the Road Construction Department has submitted a proposal to the state government for ROBs at Dallu Chowk and Hasanganj railway crossings in Sheikhpura town, as well as the Sahnoura (Kosumbha) crossing on the Sheikhpura–Shahpur road.
The proposal is yet to receive the necessary approvals. If cleared by the state government, the process of preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) will begin.
Three Busy Railway Crossings Identified
According to the department, several railway crossings are located in and around Sheikhpura town, including Jakharaj Sthan, RD College and Eksari.
However, Dallu Chowk, Hasanganj and Sahnoura have been identified as particularly important and busy crossings where road traffic frequently faces disruption.
The RD College crossing falls on a National Highway and is outside the jurisdiction of the Road Construction Department, an executive engineer said.
Railway Approval and Technical Clearances Required
The proposed ROB projects face technical and procedural challenges. The final decision on construction at railway crossings rests with the railway authorities, according to information shared by the department.
One of the factors considered while assessing an ROB proposal is the number of vehicles passing through a railway crossing over a 24-hour period. The report cites an average benchmark of one lakh vehicles in 24 hours, although the applicable criteria may vary depending on the road category.
The department indicated that the proposals would need to clear the relevant state-level and railway-level approval processes before construction planning could advance.
What Happens Next?
If the state government approves the proposal, the department will proceed with the next stages, including preparation of detailed project reports and further coordination with railway authorities.
For residents and commuters, the proposed overbridges could offer an alternative to waiting at railway gates and help improve movement on some of Sheikhpura’s important road routes. However, construction timelines and project costs have not yet been announced.
