ADRI Workshop Champions Women as Environmental Leaders in Bihar
Patna: In the face of mounting challenges posed by climate change, the role of women in safeguarding our planet’s future came into sharp focus during a workshop titled “Environmental Awareness at the Grassroots Level: Women as Agents of Change.” The event organized by Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI) on Wednesday to commemorate International Women’s Day, brought together experts and grassroots leaders to explore the pivotal role of women in tackling environmental degradation.
Dr. Prem Kumar, the state minister of the environment, forest, and climate change, emphasized the crucial contribution of women to sustainable resource management and local ecosystem preservation. Advocating for empowering women to spearhead environmental initiatives, he underscored the need for permanent solutions to combat the escalating crisis.
Jointly organized by the Center for Studies on Environment and Climate (CSEC) and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), both constituents of ADRI, the workshop drew attention to the transformative potential of women as catalysts for change.
During the event, Patna’s Mayor, Sita Sahu, lauded the significant role played by women in diverse sectors, from agriculture to handicrafts, highlighting their potential as agents of change in reshaping societal attitudes towards environmental stewardship. She emphasized the urgency of modifying human behavior to address the pressing challenges of environmental degradation.
A spotlight was cast on eight women achievers from various fields, who shared their inspirational stories of resilience and activism. RJ Anjali of Radio Mirchi stressed the symbiotic relationship between women and nature, advocating for women to lead efforts in raising awareness about environmental conservation.
Devopriya Dutta of Tarumitra urged individuals to cultivate a friendship with nature, emphasizing its profound impact on the planet’s well-being.
Additionally, 16 grassroots-level women achievers, including those engaged in roles such as ANM, ASHA, Anganwadi, and Jeevika, were recognized for their commendable contributions. Ward Councilor Shweta Rai and Diksha Priyadarshini, the Mukhiya of Sadisopur Panchayat, were among those honored for their dedication and efforts.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Ashmita Gupta, Member-Secretary of ADRI, emphasized the importance of paying attention to the narratives of women, suggesting that these narratives hold the key to driving meaningful change for the environment.
Dr. Sunita Lall of ADRI presented a token of appreciation to the Mayor on behalf of ADRI, acknowledging her support for the cause. The event was coordinated by Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Director of JSS, while Dr. Sunil Kumar Gupta of CSEC delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants for their commitment to environmental conservation.
