Patna: The Bihar government has approved the allocation of an additional 24 acres of land for the expansion of AIIMS Patna, a move aimed at strengthening the state’s tertiary healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to advanced medical services.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has directed officials to complete the land transfer process within the next two weeks to facilitate the institute’s planned expansion.
Expansion To Add 200 ICU Beds
According to the state government, the additional land will enable AIIMS Patna to establish around 200 new intensive care unit (ICU) beds and introduce several new super-specialty departments.
The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the institute’s capacity to treat critically ill patients and reduce waiting times for specialised care.
Officials said the project would improve the availability of treatment for complex and life-threatening illnesses within Bihar.
Proposal Submitted To Government
The decision follows representations seeking additional land for the institute’s expansion. BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal met the Chief Minister regarding the proposal and submitted a formal request from the Director of AIIMS Patna seeking the allocation of additional land.
Following the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed officials to expedite the transfer process.
Super-Specialty Facilities To Be Expanded
The state government plans to develop AIIMS Patna on the lines of AIIMS New Delhi, with expanded facilities including a trauma centre, cancer treatment units and liver transplant services.
Officials said strengthening these services would enable more patients to receive advanced treatment within Bihar, reducing the need to travel to hospitals in other states for specialised care.
The expansion is also expected to lower treatment-related travel costs and improve access to advanced medical procedures.
Boost To Healthcare Infrastructure
The proposed expansion forms part of the state’s broader effort to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and improve the availability of world-class medical facilities.
Officials said the additional land and new infrastructure would enhance AIIMS Patna’s role as a regional centre for super-specialty healthcare and help meet the growing demand for tertiary medical services across Bihar.
