Patna: A modern eye bank has begun operations at AIIMS Patna, with the ability to store up to 100 donated eyes for up to 14 days. The facility, developed in collaboration with LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, has been approved by the Bihar government under the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Act.
The eye bank’s first donation came from the family of a 64-year-old man from Munger, who passed away on Friday. His corneas are now preserved at the centre, with the potential to restore sight to recipients in need. According to AIIMS Patna’s executive director, Prof Dr Saurabh Varshney, this new service will be a vital resource for treating corneal blindness in the region.
Prof Dr Amit Raj, head of ophthalmology and in-charge of the eye bank, noted that eye transplants are viable for individuals aged between one and 90 years, provided medical conditions are met. “Corneas from a 64-year-old can be used to treat a one-year-old child,” he said, adding that congenital blindness is not treatable with transplants, but conditions like corneal whitening can be.
The facility includes a specially designed room staffed by three trained technicians and has already seen strong interest. “We have a long waiting list for eye transplants,” said Dr Raj, urging families of potential donors to contact the dedicated team at AIIMS Patna. Two helpline numbers have been issued: 8544423411 and 0612-2821202.
To encourage participation, AIIMS Patna awarded a certificate of appreciation to the donor’s family. Dr Anoop Kumar, medical superintendent, emphasised the significance of such gestures in promoting awareness. Dr Raj expressed hope that more families would come forward to support the cause of eye donation in the state.
