Patna: Fresh claims have emerged regarding police action against former IPS officer Amitabh Das today after he allegedly used the Government of India emblem and his IPS designation on a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu.

The letter, dated February 9, 2026, reportedly sought the immediate dismissal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and contained serious allegations, including references to alleged links with the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein. The claims have not been backed by any official findings.

The controversy, however, has centred less on the political content of the letter and more on its format. Police sources say Das, who was compulsorily retired in 2018, allegedly used an official-style letterhead bearing the state emblem and described himself with his former IPS rank.

Under the Indian State Emblem (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 2005, the use of the national emblem is restricted to authorised persons and official purposes. Legal experts say any unauthorised display could attract penal consequences.

On Friday evening, a large police contingent arrived at Das’s residence in Patliputra Colony. Officers from three police stations conducted searches at the premises. During the operation, officials said Das’s health briefly deteriorated and a medical team was called to the site. He was later taken to hospital for a routine medical examination following his detention.

A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said authorities were examining whether the alleged use of the emblem and official designation constituted a violation of the law. “The matter is under review. If there has been improper use of the state emblem, appropriate action will follow,” the official said.

Das has long been a highlighted figure in Bihar’s administrative and political circles. During his service, he was known for outspoken positions and reportedly resisted standard administrative procedures, including disputes over his Annual Confidential Report. In 2006, while posted in Jamui, a woman accused him of sexual exploitation under the pretext of marriage. Additionally, during his tenure as Superintendent of Police in Deoghar, allegations of molestation involving a foreign woman drew widespread attention.

In recent years, he has continued to make sharp public interventions on high-profile cases and political issues.
