Gopalganj/Patna: A special MP-MLA court in Gopalganj district on Friday declined to stay the arrest of Mokama MLA Anant Singh in connection with a case involving alleged display of weapons during a dance performance.
The hearing took place at the Gopalganj civil court, where Singh’s counsel sought interim protection from arrest, alleging irregularities in the police action.
Defence questions police procedure
Representing the MLA, advocate Rajesh Kumar Pathak argued that the police procedure followed in the case was flawed and raised concerns over what he described as possible political influence behind the action.
The defence urged the court to halt any coercive action against Singh until the matter was examined in detail.
Court declines stay on arrest
After hearing the arguments, the MP-MLA court refused to grant a stay on arrest at this stage.
The decision means the possibility of police action against the JD(U) legislator remains open pending further proceedings in the case.
Next hearing on May 20
The court has fixed May 20 as the next date of hearing.
It has also directed the police to submit the case diary for examination during the upcoming proceedings.
Matter draws political attention
The case has again drawn attention in political circles in Bihar, with both ruling and opposition parties closely watching the developments.
Further legal proceedings are expected after the court reviews the case diary and other materials submitted by the investigating agency.
