Patna : Bihar’s first six-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Ganges, connecting Mokama to Begusarai, is set to become operational in April 2025. Touted as the widest six-lane bridge in Asia, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time and alleviate traffic congestion across the state.
The 8.1-km-long structure will improve connectivity between North and South Bihar, benefiting districts such as Darbhanga, Samastipur, Saharsa, Madhubani, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Jamui, Nawada, Gaya, Patna, Ara, and Buxar. The bridge will also enhance links to neighbouring states including Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Assam, as well as Nepal.
The main bridge spans 1.86 km, with three lanes in each direction, each 13 metres wide. Additionally, it includes 1.5-metre-wide footpaths on both sides. The approach roads measure 3.15 km on one side and 3.27 km on the other, ensuring smoother access.
Once operational, the bridge will cut the journey time between Patna and Begusarai by two to two-and-a-half hours. It is also expected to ease pressure on the aging Rajendra Setu and Mahatma Gandhi Setu, which currently bear the brunt of traffic between North and South Bihar.
Beyond improving transport, the bridge is poised to accelerate economic activity in the region. By facilitating smoother logistics and connectivity, it is expected to boost industrial growth and create new employment opportunities.
Bihar is also set to complete another six-lane bridge at Kacchi Dargah Bidupur later this year.
