Patna: The Bihar government has announced a major upgrade to the road connecting Bakhtiyarpur and Mokama Bata Chowk, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure across the state.
The 45km stretch, which passes through Barh and several smaller towns, will be widened and modernised at an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore. Officials say the project is expected to be completed by April next year.
The route, which follows the alignment of the old NH-31, begins at Karjan near the Bakhtiyarpur–Tajpur bridge and runs through Barh, Pandarak, Mor and Shivnar before reaching Mokama. It is being redeveloped into a wider, higher-quality road to accommodate growing traffic demands in the region.
Authorities said the carriageway will be expanded from its current width of 7.5 metres to 11 metres. The project includes both structural upgrades and lane expansion, effectively transforming the road into a more efficient corridor for regional transport.
The scheme was first announced by former chief minister Nitish Kumar during his “Pragati Yatra” in Patna district on February 21, 2025. Construction work began in September that year.
Once completed, the improved road is expected to ease congestion on the old NH-31 and enhance connectivity along the Bakhtiyarpur–Mokama–Begusarai–Khagaria route. Officials say the upgrade will benefit both local commuters and freight movement, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas that rely heavily on road transport.
