Patna : Debjit Chakraborty, a doctoral scholar at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, has been selected to join the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as a scientist. He will be working under the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) in the field of soil science.
Chakraborty was selected following a competitive process that included a computer-based test in December 2024 and a final interview held in March 2025 at the NRSC headquarters in Hyderabad. His appointment follows Advertisement No. NRSC-RMT-1-2024 and he is expected to take up the role shortly.
Originally from Borai village in Singur, Hooghly district of West Bengal, Chakraborty began his academic journey at BAU as an ICAR-NTS fellow in 2019, completing his post-graduate degree in soil science and agricultural chemistry by 2021. He is currently pursuing his PhD under the supervision of Dr Nintu Mandal, with his research focused on the “bacteria-mediated synthesis of iron and zinc nanoparticles and their evaluation under wheat rhizosphere in non-calcareous and calcareous soils”.
A former UGC Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in environmental science until late 2022, Chakraborty has also been recommended for an upgrade to Senior Research Fellow (SRF) status.
Speaking after the announcement, Chakraborty expressed gratitude towards BAU for its academic environment and support. “The guidance and learning environment at the university played a crucial role in helping me achieve this position,” he said.
BAU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof D.R. Singh, congratulated Chakraborty on what he called a “remarkable achievement”, and expressed hope that more students from the university would follow in his footsteps. The Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry also held a felicitation ceremony in his honour.
