Begusarai / Patna : A proposal to connect Begusarai to the six-lane Patna-Purnia Expressway has been submitted to the Bihar government, potentially slashing travel time to Saharsa to under two hours. Begusarai District Magistrate (DM) Tushar Singla has sent the proposal to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Road Construction Department, requesting a four-lane spur from the expressway to improve connectivity.
The proposed 245-kilometre Patna-Purnia Expressway will begin at Patna Ring Road and pass through Vaishali, Samastipur, Saharsa, and Madhepura before reaching Purnia. According to the proposal, the expressway will pass near Kusheshwar Sthan, a point approximately 50 kilometres from Begusarai’s district headquarters. The proposal recommends constructing a four-lane spur of around 113-120 kilometres from the expressway’s starting point, linking Bakhri block, located near Kusheshwar Sthan, to Begusarai.
Economic and Industrial Growth Expected
During the Chief Minister’s Pragati Yatra in Begusarai, he announced a plan to construct a 7.5-kilometre bypass, including a railway overbridge (ROB) from Bakhri to the Bahadurpur border, at an estimated cost of Rs121 crore. In addition, an industrial park is proposed on around 1,000 acres in Kusmahaut Panchayat of Begusarai Sadar block. The spur route would pass through Bakhri and the Bahadurpur border, providing seamless access to the proposed industrial park and enabling smoother transportation of goods.
Reduced Travel Time and Traffic Relief
With the expressway connection, travel time between Begusarai and Saharsa is expected to be reduced to less than two hours, offering relief to commuters. The proposal highlights that the link would also ease the heavy traffic burden on National Highway 31, which frequently experiences congestion due to the large volume of industrial traffic passing through Begusarai.
Boost for Local Development
The proposed connectivity would significantly accelerate the social and economic development of Begusarai and its neighbouring blocks, including Cheria Bariyarpur, Khodawandpur, Chhaudahi, Bakhri, and Garhpura. Improved transport infrastructure would enhance local livelihoods and create opportunities for growth. Additionally, the link would support the expansion of industrial activity in the region, strengthening Begusarai’s role as a key industrial hub in Bihar.
A Strategic Move for Begusarai’s Progress
DM Tushar Singla emphasized that Begusarai is a vital revenue-generating district for Bihar. Linking it to the Patna-Purnia Expressway through a spur would not only improve movement within the region but also unlock new avenues of progress for the district and surrounding areas. “This project will pave the way for rapid industrial and economic growth in Begusarai,” he said.
