Bhagalpur: Train journeys from Bhagalpur to Patna, Delhi and several other cities have become slightly more expensive following a fresh fare hike by Indian Railways. The new rates came into effect from Friday, December 26. Under the revised system, passengers travelling more than 215 kilometres will have to pay one to two paise extra per kilometre, depending on the class of travel. However, travellers covering distances below 215 kilometres and monthly season ticket holders have been kept outside the fare increase.
The fare hike will affect many important trains that start from Bhagalpur and connect the city to major destinations across the country. These include the Vikramshila Express, Bhagalpur–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, Bhagalpur–Surat Express, Ajmer Sharif Express, Amarnath Express, Gandhidham Express, Garib Rath Express, Jamalpur–Howrah Superfast and the Farakka Express. Passengers using these trains for long journeys will notice a small rise in ticket prices, especially on routes to Patna, Delhi and western India.
For passengers travelling from Bhagalpur to Patna, the increase is modest but noticeable. Sleeper and general class fares have gone up by around Rs 2, while AC class passengers will have to pay about Rs 4.50 more. Similarly, fares from Bhagalpur to Muzaffarpur have also increased, particularly on the Amarnath Express and Janseva Express. According to the new fare structure, if a passenger travels 500 kilometres in a non-AC coach of a mail or express train, they will now pay around Rs 10 extra. The increase in AC coaches is slightly higher and depends on the total distance of the journey.
Railway officials said this is the second fare revision in the current financial year, after a similar increase was introduced in July 2025. Eastern Railway’s chief commercial manager, Uday Shankar Jha, explained that the general category fare has been raised by one paisa per kilometre for journeys beyond 215 kilometres. He added that the updated fares have already been entered into the railway system. While the hike is small, it adds to travel costs for passengers who depend on trains for long-distance journeys.
