Bhojpuri Star Akshara Singh Celebrates First Chhath Festival, Calls for Gender Equality
Patna: Bhojpuri actress and singer Akshara Singh has shared her excitement about celebrating Chhath Puja for the first time, marking a significant personal and cultural milestone. Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Akshara told her followers that she is currently in Patna, preparing for the festival with great enthusiasm.
“This is a very special festival for us,” she said. “Chhath Puja has been part of my family’s traditions for years, but this is my first time observing it. I’ve been learning how to do it properly and will make sure not to make any mistakes. My prayers will be for everyone’s happiness, and I hope there’s no shadow of sorrow in anyone’s life.”
In her message, Akshara also reflected on the persistent gender inequalities in society, particularly highlighting the traditional roles assigned to women. She mentioned her song Beti Kahe Na Bahangiya Uthe, which challenges the notion that only sons should carry the symbolic bahangi (a bamboo pole used in the rituals of Chhath Puja).
“When we released this song, people told me that in their villages, daughters also carry the bahangi,” Akshara said. “Girls play a crucial role in every step of Chhath, from the ritual of Nahai Khay to the final offerings.”
This year, Akshara said she is approaching the festival with a message of empowerment. “I’m not even married yet, but I’m doing Chhath because I feel deeply connected to it. Girls should be encouraged to take part in every aspect of the tradition, just like boys. We are capable of doing everything.”
As part of the celebrations, Akshara released new Chhath-themed music, including the track Main To Chubby, Skinny Piya, produced by Saregama Bhojpuri, and Tu Ta Janmo Se Pyara Bada Ho, released by her own label, Akshara Entertainment.
Akshara wrapped up her live session by wishing her followers a joyous Chhath Puja, saying, “Our emotions run deep during this festival. I hope you enjoy the songs I’ve dedicated to the occasion.”
