New Delhi/Patna: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 1,240 new MBBS seats in Bihar, taking the total number of undergraduate medical seats in the state to 4,660. The expansion comes as the NEET UG 2026 counselling process is underway, potentially increasing admission opportunities for medical aspirants.
Across India, the NMC has added 13,186 MBBS seats, taking the national total from 1,27,028 to 1,40,214 seats, according to the commission’s updated seat matrix.
Bihar among top states for seat expansion
Bihar has recorded one of the largest increases in MBBS seats nationally, with 1,240 new seats approved. Uttar Pradesh has received 1,200 additional seats, taking its total to 14,400.
Karnataka has recorded the highest increase, with 1,650 new MBBS seats, taking its total to 15,745. Tamil Nadu follows with 1,250 new seats, bringing its total to 14,299.
The additions place Bihar third among the states with the largest increase in MBBS seats.
13,186 seats added across 27 states and UTs
The NMC has approved the addition of 13,186 MBBS seats across 27 states and Union Territories. However, no new seats have been added in seven states and Union Territories: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Delhi, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland.
The expansion is expected to increase the pool of seats available to candidates competing for MBBS admissions through NEET UG counselling.
Counselling committees told to follow approved matrix
The NMC has also issued directions to counselling authorities regarding the use of the updated seat matrix.
If a counselling committee finds any discrepancy or inconsistency in the matrix, it has been directed to refer the matter to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). Counselling committees cannot grant admissions beyond the number of seats approved and notified by the MARB.
Comes amid NEET UG 2026 counselling
The revised seat matrix comes as the NEET UG 2026 counselling process is underway. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released the provisional seat allotment results for Round 2 of counselling.
The addition of thousands of seats across the country, including 1,240 in Bihar, has changed the overall availability of MBBS seats for candidates participating in the ongoing admission process.
