Patna: Public transport in Bihar is set for a major electric upgrade, with 400 electric buses to be introduced across six major cities under the PM E-Bus Scheme.
Patna will receive the largest share with 150 e-buses, while Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnia and Darbhanga will get 50 buses each.
The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) has stepped up preparations for the operation of the new fleet, including the development of charging infrastructure in the respective cities.
Patna to Get 150 E-Buses
According to BSRTC administrator Atul Verma, the state is expected to receive 400 electric buses under the PM E-Bus Scheme.
The fleet will comprise 200 nine-metre buses and 200 12-metre buses.
Patna will receive 75 buses of each category — 75 nine-metre buses and 75 12-metre buses.
Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnia and Darbhanga will each receive 25 nine-metre and 25 12-metre buses, taking their individual allocation to 50 buses.
Operations in the respective cities will begin after the e-buses are made available and the required infrastructure is ready.
Charging Stations Being Prepared
The BSRTC is working on charging infrastructure to ensure the smooth operation of the electric buses.
Construction of a charging station in Muzaffarpur has reached its final stage, while work on charging facilities in the other cities is also underway.
The charging network will be an important part of the rollout as the state prepares to integrate the electric fleet into existing public transport systems.
How the 400 E-Buses Will Be Distributed
| City | 9-Metre Buses | 12-Metre Buses | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patna | 75 | 75 | 150 |
| Gaya | 25 | 25 | 50 |
| Muzaffarpur | 25 | 25 | 50 |
| Bhagalpur | 25 | 25 | 50 |
| Purnia | 25 | 25 | 50 |
| Darbhanga | 25 | 25 | 50 |

E-Buses to Reduce Dependence on Diesel
The introduction of electric buses is expected to change the public transport experience in Bihar’s major cities.
The modern buses will provide passengers with an additional public transport option, while replacing some diesel-powered operations with electric mobility could help reduce vehicular emissions.
The move is also part of the broader effort to strengthen public transportation infrastructure and promote cleaner urban mobility.
Bihar Prepares for Electric Public Transport Expansion
With charging stations being developed alongside the planned fleet deployment, the e-bus programme is expected to expand electric public transport across six important urban centres.
Patna’s allocation of 150 buses will make it the largest beneficiary of the programme, while Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnia and Darbhanga will each receive 50 buses.
The rollout will depend on the availability of buses and completion of the required charging infrastructure in each city.
