Patna:Bihar’s traffic system is set for a major upgrade as the state transport department moves ahead with a plan to install artificial intelligence-based cameras at 225 of the busiest and most congested intersections and road corridors. The decision has been taken to improve traffic flow, reduce accidents and ensure stricter enforcement of traffic rules. Officials have said that the installation process will be completed before March, while groundwork in districts will begin after 15 January. The initiative is being described as a step towards creating a safer, smarter and more disciplined traffic environment across the state.
The new surveillance network will first focus on Patna and its surrounding areas before expanding to other important towns and districts. After Patna city, areas such as Danapur, Phulwari Sharif, Gola Road, Patna City, Kankarbagh and Fatuha will come under camera monitoring. Along with this, major intersections in districts including Hajipur, Bhojpur, Arwal, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Forbesganj, Gaya, Barh, Begusarai, Jamui, Aurangabad and Siwan have been selected for coverage. These locations have been identified because traffic congestion and rule violations are common where multiple roads meet.
According to the transport department, the cameras will play a key role in managing traffic more efficiently. Live monitoring will allow traffic police and district transport officials to respond quickly to congestion and enforce rules in real time. By controlling traffic signals better and discouraging violations, the authorities hope to reduce long traffic jams and make daily commuting smoother for the general public. The department believes that visible surveillance itself will encourage drivers to follow rules more carefully.
A major feature of the project is the use of artificial intelligence in upgraded district-level control rooms. The AI-enabled cameras will automatically detect vehicles that break traffic rules and generate alerts. Challans will then be issued directly to the vehicle owners, making the process quicker and more transparent. Officials say this system will reduce human intervention and limit chances of errors or misuse, while also ensuring that offenders are held accountable.
Beyond traffic management, the government expects the camera network to help curb anti-social activities. Continuous monitoring at busy crossings can assist the police in identifying theft, snatching and other suspicious activities, allowing for faster action. The new plan will also strengthen the existing CCTV system already in place at several district headquarters, creating a uniform and robust monitoring network across Bihar.
With the installation of high-tech cameras at key locations, Bihar’s traffic management is entering a new phase. The government hopes that discipline, technology and swift enforcement will replace congestion and confusion on the roads. If successful, the initiative is expected to not only ease daily travel for citizens but also set an example of modern, technology-driven traffic control in the state.
