Patna: Bihar’s government will distribute Rs 7.43 crore in cash prizes and certificates to athletes, coaches and sporting associations at its annual sports awards ceremony, with the chief minister set to preside over the event.
This year’s ceremony will see 630 athletes, 152 para-athletes, 24 coaches, five sports associations and one official honoured for their achievements in national and international competitions. The state government said the awards aim not only to reward sporting excellence but also to encourage younger generations to pursue sport.
Athletes were selected based on performances between April 2024 and March 2025 at major events including the National School Games, National Championships and the Khelo India Youth Games. Para-athletes who brought medals to the state were also included.
To ensure transparency, the Bihar State Sports Authority required applicants to register online, with a helpline provided to address grievances. A committee scrutinised documents and achievements before approving names. Applications with discrepancies were rejected, and the final list was published publicly with a window for objections.
Officials said the awards underscore the government’s commitment to supporting sport in the state. They added that the recognition would not only provide financial support but also inspire athletes to continue excelling at higher levels of competition.
