Patna: The Bihar government has commenced paddy procurement in 19 districts, purchasing from farmers at a rate of Rs 23 per kg for general grade paddy. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has reviewed the procurement process, setting a target of buying 45 lakh metric tonnes of paddy for the 2024-25 financial year. This rice, converted from procured paddy, will supply 5 kg of rice per person to low-income households across the state.
Chief Minister Kumar emphasized strict action against any irregularities in the procurement process and urged for smooth operations to meet district-specific targets. Paddy procurement will continue through February 15, 2025, allowing farmers ample time to sell their produce.
With a high demand for Usna (parboiled) rice in Bihar, the government has increased the number of Usna mills to 360, enhancing the processing capacity to meet consumer needs. Paddy procurement in the remaining districts is expected to begin in about two weeks.
This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing support for the agricultural sector, ensuring fair prices for farmers while securing food supplies for the population.
