Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar is set to appoint Sanjay Sarawagi as its new state president on Thursday, in a move welcomed with enthusiasm across the party’s state organisation. Sarawagi, a six-time MLA from Darbhanga Sadar, will formally assume office at the Bihar BJP headquarters in Patna, with senior leaders including the Deputy Chief Minister expected to be present.
The appointment, announced on Monday, marks a change in leadership from Dilip Kumar Jaiswal. Following the announcement, several senior party figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Health Minister Mangal Pandey, visited Sarawagi’s residence to offer their congratulations. Sarawagi, describing the party as “like a mother” to him, pledged to uphold the trust placed in him.
Born on August 28, 1969 Sarawagi, a resident of Darbhanga’s Gandhi Chowk area, holds an M.Com and an MBA. His political journey began in student politics with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) before joining the BJP in 1995. He first entered the Bihar assembly in 2005 and has since been re-elected consecutively from the Darbhanga Sadar constituency, earning a reputation as a leader with a clean image and a stronghold in the city.
Sarawagi briefly served as a minister during the Nitish Kumar cabinet expansion last year, though he was not included in the current cabinet. His appointment as state president signals a shift towards consolidating the party’s organisational strength. Ahead of assuming office, he emphasised plans to engage closely with party workers and strengthen the BJP’s structure across Bihar, highlighting the recent appointment of Nitin Nabin as Working President as a source of pride for the organisation.
A member of the Vaishya (OBC) community, Sarawagi’s rise also sends a political signal from the Mithilanchal region, a key area in Bihar politics. His appointment is being interpreted as an effort to reinforce the party’s influence in the region while consolidating its leadership at the state level.
