Patna: Rail passengers in Bihar could see a major transformation in inter-city travel if the proposed high-speed rail connectivity between Delhi and Patna moves ahead as planned. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has shared an important update on the proposed high-speed rail corridor connecting Bihar’s capital with Delhi.
The proposed route would connect Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Patna, creating a high-speed rail link between the national capital and Bihar.
At present, train journeys between Delhi and Patna can take around 10 to 12 hours or longer, depending on the service. The proposed high-speed connection aims to reduce the journey of roughly 1,000 kilometres to around four and a half hours.
Proposed Route to Connect Major Cities
The planned corridor is expected to pass through several major cities in Uttar Pradesh before reaching Patna. The proposed travel times indicate a substantial reduction in journey duration.
According to the available information, the estimated travel times are:
- Delhi to Agra: Around 58 minutes
- Delhi to Kanpur: Around 1 hour 50 minutes
- Delhi to Lucknow: Around 2 hours 12 minutes
- Delhi to Prayagraj: Around 3 hours
- Delhi to Varanasi: Around 3 hours 33 minutes
- Delhi to Patna: Around 4.5 hours
Major Benefit for Bihar’s Delhi-NCR Population
The proposed connectivity could be particularly significant for people from Bihar who live in Delhi-NCR, Noida, Ghaziabad and neighbouring areas for employment, education and business.
Faster rail connectivity could also provide an alternative for passengers travelling home during high-demand periods such as Diwali and Chhath, when railway services between Delhi and Bihar often experience heavy demand.
Bihar Could Get New High-Speed Rail Stations
The bullet train project is also expected to improve connectivity within Bihar. Available information indicates that approximately 400 kilometres of railway track could be laid in the state as part of the project.
Proposed stations in Bihar have reportedly included Patna, Buxar and Katihar. If developed, these stations could provide faster access not only to residents of the respective districts but also to people from surrounding areas.
The high-speed rail network is also expected to strengthen Bihar’s links with Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi.

If the proposed high-speed rail project progresses as planned, the journey between Delhi and Patna could be reduced from the current 10–12 hours or more on many conventional services to around 4.5 hours.
