Patna: Authorities in Bihar have introduced a new set of guidelines for bus operators aimed at curbing arbitrary fare collection, even as preparations are underway to revise ticket prices across the state.
The measures, issued by the transport department, seek to bring greater transparency and discipline to the bus network. Under the new rules, buses will be allowed to stop only at registered bus stands, while passenger intake must strictly adhere to the vehicle’s seating capacity.
Officials said the changes are intended to improve passenger convenience and standardise operations across routes. As part of the initiative, all buses will be required to maintain a complaint register, enabling passengers to report grievances, which authorities say will be formally addressed.
The crackdown comes in response to frequent complaints of overcharging by operators. Under the new framework, collecting fares above the prescribed rate will be treated as a punishable offence under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. District transport officers have also been directed to ensure that fare charts are prominently displayed both at bus stands and inside vehicles.
Alongside the regulatory push, the state is considering a fare revision. A proposal under review suggests an increase of 15% for journeys up to 50km, 14% for distances up to 100km, 13% up to 150km, 12% up to 200km, 11% up to 250km, and 10% for routes exceeding 300km.
The dual approach of stricter enforcement and revised pricing reflects an attempt by authorities to balance operator viability with passenger protection.
