Patna: Bihar Cabinet has approved a proposal to redevelop 31 bus depots and stands of the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) into multi-storey transport hubs under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The decision was taken in the Council of Ministers meeting chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Wednesday, officials said.
Multi-Storey Transport Hubs Planned
Transport Minister Damodar Rawat said the redevelopment plan aims to transform existing bus depots into integrated passenger facilities with modern infrastructure and commercial spaces.
According to the Transport Department, the new structures will range from G+4 to G+6 buildings and will combine transport operations with civic and commercial services.
Passenger Facilities On Lower Floors
Transport Secretary Raj Kumar said the ground and lower floors will be dedicated to passenger services and transport operations.
These will include bus bays, digital ticket counters, waiting lounges, passenger assistance centres, cafeterias, clean toilets, drinking water units, ATMs, security rooms, CCTV surveillance, and charging points.
The first floor will house air-conditioned waiting areas, administrative offices of the corporation, food courts, retail shops, and service centres, while the second floor will include rest rooms and dormitories for drivers and conductors.
Commercial Development On Upper Floors
From G+3 to G+6, the complexes will host commercial establishments such as hotels, shopping malls, multiplexes, banquet halls, offices, and entertainment spaces.
Officials said revenue generated from these facilities will be shared between BSRTC and private partners, improving financial sustainability of the transport infrastructure.
E-Bus Infrastructure And Technical Facilities
The project also includes development of electric bus infrastructure such as charging stations, modern workshops, parking bays, inspection units, drainage systems, sewage treatment plants (STPs), effluent treatment systems (ETPs), and backup power arrangements.
Officials said the upgraded depots will be equipped to support future expansion of e-bus services, including the planned induction of 400 electric buses.
District-Wise Coverage
The 31 bus stands identified for redevelopment are located across Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gayaji, Bhagalpur, Purnia, Darbhanga, Munger, Jamui, Nawada, Saharsa, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Motihari, Saran, Sitamarhi, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Jehanabad, and Sheikhpura.
Push For Modern Public Transport
Officials described the project as a major step towards modernising Bihar’s public transport system, aimed at improving passenger experience, increasing efficiency, and attracting private investment.
They said the redesigned hubs are expected to support rising passenger demand, strengthen urban connectivity, and generate employment opportunities across the state.
