Patna: Bihar is facing a prolonged spell of severe winter weather, with dense fog and cold day conditions expected to persist across much of the state through the end of December and into the new year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
An orange alert has been issued for all 38 districts, warning of cold days and poor visibility as icy westerly winds continue to dominate the region. On Saturday morning, dense fog reduced visibility to near zero in several areas, disrupting road traffic and daily life. More than 20 towns and cities, including Bhojpur, Bettiah, Bagaha, Gopalganj, Samastipur and Jehanabad, woke to thick fog, forcing motorists to use headlights even after sunrise.
Meteorologists say the cold has tightened its grip as minimum temperatures continue to hover at unusually low levels. Gaya recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 5.2°C on December 27, while minimum temperatures across Bihar ranged between 5.2°C and 13.3°C. In Gaya, visibility dropped to as low as 50 metres, with dense fog persisting for several hours. Elsewhere, light to moderate fog was reported.

What the forecast shows
Meteorologists expect dry weather across Bihar for the next seven days, offering no respite from the cold. Cold day conditions are likely to continue in parts of northern, south-western and south-central Bihar over the weekend, accompanied by dense fog in the same regions.
From December 29 onwards, dense fog is forecast at isolated locations in northern districts, gradually spreading to most parts of the state by December 31 and continuing through January 2. Moderate to dense fog is likely at isolated places for at least the next five days.

Temperature trends offer little comfort. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged, while minimum temperatures may fall further by 2–3°C in some areas over the next four to five days, intensifying the chill, particularly at night and during early mornings.
Meteorologists caution that relief is unlikely until there is a shift in wind patterns. Until then, residents are being urged to take precautions, especially while travelling in low-visibility conditions, as Bihar endures one of its harshest winter spells of the season.
