Patna: Bihar has intensified its traffic enforcement drive ahead of Durga Puja, warning motorists against violating road safety rules during the festive period. More than 16,000 e-challans have been issued across the state in the past 10 days, with penalties totalling approximately Rs 15.5 crore.
The special enforcement campaign will continue until October 20, targeting motorists riding without helmets, travelling without seatbelts, engaging in triple riding and violating other traffic regulations. Action will also be taken against underage drivers.
Authorities have deployed enforcement personnel at major intersections and other key locations. Traffic cameras are also being used to identify violations and issue e-challans.
Special Traffic Drive Across Bihar Until October 20
The Transport Department launched the campaign to improve road safety and curb violations that can lead to accidents and serious injuries.
Under the drive, enforcement teams in all districts are conducting checks against motorists who fail to wear helmets or seatbelts, allow minors to drive or violate other traffic rules.
The campaign is being conducted under the directions of Transport Secretary Raj Kumar. District Transport Officers, Additional District Transport Officers, Motor Vehicle Inspectors and Enforcement Sub-Inspectors have been assigned responsibilities for carrying out inspections.
Over 16,000 E-Challans Issued in 10 Days
According to the Transport Department, enforcement teams issued more than 16,000 e-challans during the 10 days preceding the latest review. The total penalty amount associated with these challans is approximately Rs 15.5 crore.
State Transport Commissioner Arif Ahsan reviewed the progress of the campaign through a video conference with transport officials from various districts on Tuesday.
During the meeting, he directed officials to intensify enforcement activities and ensure effective action against traffic violations.
More Checks at Intersections and Checkpoints
The State Transport Commissioner instructed district officials to strengthen inspections at major road intersections and checkpoints.
Officials have also been directed to review enforcement activities daily, monitor progress and ensure that e-challans are issued against identified violations in line with the campaign’s targets.
The department has warned that officials who fail to meet their assigned targets or demonstrate poor performance may be held accountable.
Helmet and Seatbelt Rules to Be Enforced Strictly
The Transport Department has urged motorists not to assume that traffic rules will be relaxed during Durga Puja celebrations.
Two-wheeler riders must wear helmets, including the person riding pillion, while occupants of four-wheelers must use seatbelts. Allowing minors to drive is also prohibited.
Authorities have emphasised that compliance with road safety rules is essential to reducing road accidents, preventing serious injuries and protecting lives during the festive season.
The department has appealed to people to celebrate Durga Puja responsibly and follow traffic regulations throughout the special enforcement period.
