Muzaffarpur: The heatwave gripping Muzaffarpur has exacerbated the spread of encephalitis, with two additional cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) confirmed in the district. This brings the total number of AES-related cases to four. The affected children have been admitted to SKMCH Medical College Hospital in Muzaffarpur for treatment under the care of specialized physicians.

In SKMCH Medical College, two children diagnosed with AES are receiving treatment. Another case has surfaced from Nanpur in Sitamarhi district, with 5-year-old Golu Kumar admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ward of the hospital after displaying symptoms of encephalitis. The district now reports four confirmed cases of AES.

The two children admitted to SKMCH were brought in critical condition on March 21, complaining of high fever and encephalitis symptoms. Nodal officer Dr. Satish Kumar confirmed the AES diagnosis during their treatment and examination.

Muzaffarpur, along with neighboring districts, experiences intense and humid summer heat annually, often leading to outbreaks of encephalitis. Children are particularly vulnerable to this disease. Over the past decade, thousands of children have succumbed to encephalitis. To combat this, a modern 100-bed PICU ward has been established at SKMCH Medical College in Muzaffarpur, resulting in significant success in reducing encephalitis-related fatalities.
