Patna: Bihar continues to reel under intense heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in Patna, Gopalganj, East and West Champaran, Bhagalpur, Sheikhpura, Chhapra, and Banka districts. The remaining districts have also been warned of hot and humid weather over the next few days.
According to the IMD, hot westerly winds and dry weather will prevail across the state, further pushing up temperatures. On Sunday, Begusarai recorded a scorching 40.07°C, with a minimum of 31.00°C — both readings about four degrees above normal.
The Met Department forecasts that these extreme conditions will persist for the next four days, with temperatures expected to hover around 42°C during the day and 31°C at night. Medical experts warn that the number of patients suffering from heat-related ailments such as headaches, dehydration, and acidity is rising steadily.
Possible Relief from May 15
There may be some respite after May 15, with the IMD predicting a change in weather patterns. Westerly winds are expected to continue at 8 to 12 km/h until then, but cloud cover, thunderstorms, and winds exceeding 40 km/h could bring relief to the heat-stricken state.
Authorities are urging citizens to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
