Patna: At least 58 people have died across Bihar in the past 24 hours following intense storms, torrential rain and lightning strikes, prompting the state’s weather office to issue fresh warnings as conditions are set to worsen.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 10 districts on Friday, cautioning residents of North Bihar, Kosi and Seemanchal regions to brace for more severe weather. A yellow alert remains in place for the rest of the state.

The forecast includes the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds, with gusts expected to reach 30–40 km/h. Light rain is also predicted in scattered areas. Heavy downpours are likely in parts of West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar.

The Patna Meteorological Centre warned that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist across Bihar until April 12, after which storm activity may subside and temperatures begin to rise again.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, especially in rural areas where infrastructure may be vulnerable. People have been advised to avoid standing under trees, electric poles or kutcha houses during storms due to the heightened risk of lightning strikes.

“Seek shelter in a concrete building immediately if the weather worsens,” the IMD said. “Avoid working in fields during such conditions, and take extra care if you’ve harvested your crops — store them securely. Tin roofs and thatched structures may not withstand strong winds.”
