Muzaffarpur: Flood-like conditions have emerged in Sahebganj block of Muzaffarpur district after the water level of the Gandak river rose following a large release from the Valmikinagar barrage in West Champaran.
Water has reached the doorsteps of homes in several low-lying areas, while agricultural fields have also been inundated. Residents in affected areas are concerned about further flooding and the possible impact on crops and livestock.
2.24 Lakh Cusecs Released From Valmikinagar
According to officials, around 2.24 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Valmikinagar barrage late Thursday evening.
The water reached Sahebganj on Sunday, leading to a rise in the Gandak’s water level and the spread of water into low-lying parts of the block.
Water Reaches Homes In Several Panchayats
Water has reached the doorsteps of houses in low-lying areas of Madhopur Hazari and Bangra Nizamat panchayats.
The affected areas include Ward No. 4 of Madhopur Hazari and Wards 1, 2, 3 and 6 of Bangra Nizamat, according to information from the area.
Water has also spread into low-lying parts of Roop Chhapra panchayat, affecting movement along some roads and local connecting routes.
Farmers Worried As Fields Remain Submerged
The rising water level has also affected agricultural land in Sahebganj.
According to local reports, floodwater has spread across around 70 per cent of the block’s agricultural fields. Farmers are concerned about possible damage to standing crops if the water remains in the fields.
Residents said the spread of water has been continuing in low-lying areas, prompting families to move household belongings to safer places.
Livestock Owners Face Additional Challenges
The flooding has also created difficulties for livestock owners, who are trying to move their animals to safer and higher ground.
Families living in huts and other temporary or vulnerable structures are particularly concerned if the water level rises further.
Movement Affected In Low-Lying Areas
The spread of water has begun affecting local movement in some parts of the block.
Water has reached roads and connecting routes in some low-lying areas, making travel more difficult for residents. Local residents have urged authorities to maintain close monitoring of the situation.
River Level Expected To Fall
Water Resources Department Assistant Engineer Anil Kumar said the Gandak’s discharge is expected to decline to around 1.30 lakh cusecs by Monday.
According to the official, the lower water level could bring gradual improvement in the affected areas. Water is expected to move through seven panchayats of Sahebganj towards Rewa as the river level changes.
Residents Seek Closer Monitoring
Residents have urged the administration to increase monitoring in the affected panchayats and prepare relief and evacuation arrangements if the water level rises further.
For now, authorities and the Water Resources Department are monitoring the Gandak’s water level, while residents in low-lying areas are waiting for the water to recede.
