Patna: Water levels in several major rivers in Bihar are receding or stabilising, even as relief operations continue across 14 flood-affected districts. According to the Disaster Management Department, around 43.64 lakh people have been affected across 527 gram panchayats in 85 blocks.

The department said water discharge in the Gandak and Kosi rivers remained stable, while the Sone recorded an increasing trend. Relief and rescue teams continue to monitor river levels and assist people in affected areas.

Gandak And Kosi Discharge Stable

As of 10 am on September 10, the Gandak’s discharge at the Valmikinagar Barrage stood at 86,000 cusecs, with the trend remaining stable. The highest discharge recorded in 2026 was 2,24,000 cusecs on July 14.

The Kosi’s discharge at the Birpur Barrage was recorded at 1,44,240 cusecs, also with a stable trend. Its highest discharge this year was 2,55,425 cusecs on July 20.

The Sone river, however, recorded an increasing trend. Its discharge at the Indrapuri Barrage was 72,604 cusecs, compared with the year’s highest discharge of 5,63,654 cusecs recorded on September 2.

Ganga Above Previous Highest Flood Level At Sultanganj

The Disaster Management Department said the Ganga’s water level at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur was recorded at 36.80 metres at 8 am on September 8.

This was 0.05 metres above the previous highest flood level of 36.75 metres, recorded at the location on August 17, 2021. However, the water level at Sultanganj was showing a declining trend.

According to the Water Resources Department’s Ganga Sone Flood Protection Division report issued at 6 am on September 10, the Ganga’s water level was declining at Digha Ghat, Maner and Hathidah in Patna, as well as Munger.

The level remained steady at Buxar and Gandhi Ghat in Patna. Except at Buxar, the Ganga was flowing above the danger level at several monitoring locations, including Maner, Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat, Hathidah and Munger.

Several Rivers Flowing Above Danger Mark

The department said several rivers and monitoring points remained above the danger mark.

These include the Gandak at Dumariaghat; Kosi at Baltara and Kursela; Burhi Gandak at Khagaria; Ganga at Digha, Gandhi Ghat, Hathidah, Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon and Munger; Punpun at Sripalpur; Bagmati at Benibad; and Ghaghara at Darauli and Gangpur Siswan.

Authorities are continuing to monitor these locations as water levels and discharge patterns change.

951 Community Kitchens Serving Flood Victims

Relief efforts have continued alongside the river monitoring operations.

A total of 951 community kitchens are currently operating across affected districts. More than 33.88 lakh meals have been served to flood-affected people so far, according to the Disaster Management Department.

The department has also arranged food, accommodation and medical facilities for 11,255 people at 15 relief camps.

Polythene Sheets And Dry Rations Distributed

Relief materials are also being distributed among affected families.

According to the department, 2.57 lakh polythene sheets and 40,600 dry-ration packets have been distributed. Around 6,692 quintals of cattle feed have also been supplied to support livestock in flood-affected areas.

1,932 Boats Deployed For Evacuation

To support evacuation and transportation, 1,932 boats are currently being operated in affected areas.

The rescue operation also includes 27 SDRF teams and 10 NDRF teams, which have been deployed across different districts to strengthen emergency response and provide relief to affected communities.

43.64 Lakh People Affected Across 14 Districts

The Disaster Management Department said floods have affected approximately 43.64 lakh people across 14 districts — Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea and Arwal.

While water levels are showing signs of decline or stability at several locations, authorities continue to monitor rivers above the danger mark and maintain relief and rescue arrangements across the affected districts.
