Patna: Bihar’s flood situation is showing signs of gradual improvement, with water levels in the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and other major rivers declining on Sunday. According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), several river monitoring points are expected to record further falls by Monday.
Despite the downward trend, the Ganga continues to flow above the danger mark at multiple locations, including Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat and Hathidah in the Patna region, as well as Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon.
The forecast indicates that water levels could fall at most of the monitored locations, although a few stations may record a rise. Rivers are expected to move below the danger mark in some areas over the next three days if the current trend continues.
Ganga Water Level in Patna: Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat and Hathidah
According to the CWC figures reported on Sunday morning, the Ganga was flowing above the danger mark at three major monitoring points in and around Patna.
- Digha Ghat: The water level was 14 cm above the danger mark at 6 am on Sunday. A fall of 24 cm was forecast by 8 am on Monday.
- Gandhi Ghat: The river was 85 cm above the danger mark. A decline of 25 cm was expected.
- Hathidah: The Ganga was flowing 83 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 17 cm forecast by Monday morning.
The projected declines could ease pressure on riverbank areas, but the situation will depend on actual changes in water levels.
Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon: Ganga Remains Above Danger Mark
The Ganga was also flowing above the danger mark at monitoring points in Bhagalpur district.
At Bhagalpur, the river stood 2 cm above the danger mark on Sunday. A fall of 5 cm was forecast by Monday evening.
At Kahalgaon, the water level was 91 cm above the danger mark. Unlike most of the other locations, the CWC forecast a possible rise of 4 cm by Monday night.
The contrasting forecasts underline why residents in flood-prone areas should continue monitoring local conditions even as the overall trend improves.
Munger: Ganga Below Danger Mark
At Munger, the Ganga was flowing 8 cm below the danger mark on Sunday. The CWC forecast a further decline of 9 cm by Monday morning.
The reading suggests comparatively less immediate pressure at this monitoring point than at several locations farther upstream and downstream where the river remained above the danger threshold.
Son and Ghaghra Rivers Also Expected to Recede
The CWC also forecast falling water levels in the Son and Ghaghra rivers.
- Maner, Patna district: The Son was 27 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 28 cm forecast by Monday morning.
- Darouli, Siwan district: The Ghaghra was 59 cm above the danger mark, with a decline of 28 cm expected.
- Gangpur Siswan, Siwan district: The Ghaghra was 6 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 33 cm forecast.
If these declines materialise, water levels at some locations could move closer to or below the danger threshold.
Gandak River: Water Level Expected to Fall
The Gandak was below the danger mark at Rewaghat in Muzaffarpur district and Hajipur in Vaishali district. However, it remained above the threshold at Dumariaghat in Gopalganj district.
The reported readings and forecasts were:
- Rewaghat, Muzaffarpur: 14 cm below the danger mark, with a further fall of 57 cm forecast by Monday morning.
- Hajipur, Vaishali: 64 cm below the danger mark, with a decline of 18 cm expected.
- Dumariaghat, Gopalganj: 48 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 20 cm forecast by Monday morning.
The expected decline at Dumariaghat could reduce the river’s level, although it was still above the danger mark in the reported reading.
Budhi Gandak and Bagmati Remain Above Danger Mark at Some Locations
The Budhi Gandak and Bagmati rivers also continued to show elevated water levels at certain monitoring points.
At Khagaria, the Budhi Gandak was 115 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 11 cm forecast.
On the Bagmati, the river was 87 cm below the danger mark at Runni Saidpur in Muzaffarpur district, where a further decline of 23 cm was expected. At Benibad, also in Muzaffarpur district, the river was 83 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 11 cm forecast by Monday.
The readings indicate that river conditions vary considerably between monitoring points, making district-level updates important.
Adhwara and Kosi Rivers: Further Decline Forecast
The Adhwara river group was flowing above the danger mark at Kamtaul in Madhubani district.
The reported water level was 49 cm above the danger mark, with a decline of 9 cm forecast by Monday.
The Kosi also remained above the danger mark at two monitoring points:
- Baltara, Khagaria: 34 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 4 cm forecast.
- Kursela, Katihar: 57 cm above the danger mark, with a fall of 4 cm forecast.
Although the expected declines are relatively small, the readings show that flood-related concerns remain in parts of north and eastern Bihar.
Flood Monitoring to Continue as Water Levels Change
The overall decline in river levels offers some hope of gradual relief, but the Ganga and several other rivers remain above the danger mark at multiple locations.
The CWC forecasts are projections rather than confirmed outcomes. Actual water levels may differ from the predicted readings, and local conditions can change with rainfall and upstream water flows.
Residents in flood-prone areas should continue following official advisories, avoid entering fast-flowing water and remain alert to warnings issued by district administrations.
